Gleaning

What is gleaning? Glean: verb, to gather from the fields after the main harvest.

In the Ithaca community, the ‘Gleaning is Gorges’ is a group of volunteers who go to local farms to rescue vegetables from fields. The vegetables go to FDN’s food distribution partners and local food banks.

Want to get involved? Gleaning is a wonderful way to enjoy time outdoors, visit local farms, and get food to people!

Email glean@friendshipdonations.org to be added to the Gleaning is Gorges Google Group. You will then receive emails about gleaning opportunities.

Are you a farmer who wants to invite gleaning after harvest?
Email glean@friendshipdonations.org and we will coordinate with you.

Farm Spotlight
Aaron Munzer and Kara Cusolito of Plowbreak Farm (Hector, NY) share their experience hosting gleaning:

We look forward to working with Friendship Donations volunteers every season. Through busy weeks and crazy weather, they come out and get the crops picked and packed every time. We love meeting new people and letting folks experience good old fashioned farm work. We love knowing that our produce feeds families in need throughout the area. Everyone deserves fresh produce!
