Special to The Journal

The Community Foundation’s Women’s Fund held its Third Annual Luncheon at Ithaca College’s Emerson Suites on Tuesday.

More than 175 people attended the event, which focused on the three stages of a woman’s life – caring for youth, elderly and self. The event included a panel discussion, the presentation of four Women’s Fund Grants and the 2007 Laura Holmberg Award.

Diane Shafer, chair of the Women’s Fund Advisory Committee, opened the event with brief remarks, commenting on how women, “have come a long way but have more to go.”

Sara Pines, the director of the Friendship Donations Network, was presented the 2007 Laura Holmberg Award, which honors women who selflessly contribute to the community to promote opportunities for women. Pines, who received a standing ovation when accepting the award, directs a food rescue program that feeds more than 2,000 people weekly with mostly perishable food donated from local food stores.

Her all-volunteer corps distributes this safe and necessary food to 28 food pantries, low-wage work sites, after school programs, youth rehab centers and other human-service programs. Annually, they rescue 750,000 pounds of food to fight community hunger.

The Community Foundation of Tompkins County is a local organization that aims to assist women by promoting educational, social and economic equality through the Women’s Fund.
